THE DREAM JOB OF WORKING FOR YOURSELF: HOW TO TURN A HOBBY INTO PROFIT
In short, it did not happen over night, nor was Dave Harber and Antonio’s success something that happened quickly…but they, like a lot of us, asked some serious questions about what it was they really wanted to do in terms of their career. Of course, it took more than just initiative but they eventually turned their hobby into a profit and then a career.
Since we were children, most of us have imagined fantastic jobs…the ideal work that would not only pay the bills, but give us some sort of meaning in life…oh and perhaps not involve us working 24/7. To do something we love and make it a career at the same time, is unfortunately, a fantasy for many of us as we go about our daily work, but what if…
WHAT WE LIKE/HATE ABOUT WORKING FOR OTHERS
We enjoy making money and bringing home our own paychecks, and working at a successful career…good! Then of course, some of us have to work a job or for a company that we either dislike intensely or yes, even hate….not good!
WHAT WE DISLIKE/HATE ABOUT EMPLOYMENT WITH OTHERS
We might not know exactly what’s going on and perhaps can only vaguely sense something’s not working for us. Usually the frustration builds making us desperate for another job. When we’re in this type of job, we cringe at the idea of going to work and will come up with a list of excuses as to why we cannot go to work that day. Maybe it’s something to do with the way we’re treated or spoken to…not included in certain important decisions…heaps of reasons.
FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU HATE ABOUT EMPLOYMENT WITH OTHERS
Bottom line, we need to figure out what we dislike/hate about our job or what we dislike/hate about being employed by someone else. Usually, with every job that we hate, there is something that we love about it. Even though you feel an extreme amount of pressure from working for a job that you hate, it is important to consciously evaluate what you hate about your job, boss or company. By assessing your job in a logical fashion, you need to ask yourself a series of questions. You should ask yourself a series of questions and thoroughly reflect on these questions with well thought out answers.
WRITING YOUR BUSINESS PLAN
Setting up a business with serious rigidity will not help it succeed, but will only help to pull it under. Now that you have compiled all of the things you hated or loved about your old job, you should be able to incorporate these important traits into the business you will soon create. Through figuring out these important aspects, you will learn all of the valuable components of what to include or not to include in the business you create to support your hobby.
WHAT IS YOUR HOBBY? FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO FOR PROFIT.
The idea of this section is to help you focus on one specific aspect of a hobby and mold it into a profitable business. It can be overwhelming if you “take on too much” with a business idea. Hopefully, you have understood that by focusing on a certain aspect of your hobby, you are in fact creating a “niche” for your product line.
LOOK AT SIMILAR BUSINESSES GET IDEAS.
It absolutely must be taken seriously. The first, and for most, easiest way to conduct research is from home or a local library with the use of the internet. Perhaps they are doing something you haven’t thought of or perhaps you want to do something they haven’t thought of. You may need to visit businesses to get an idea of how they conduct their company. Researching your competition is a bold yet important step you need to take before turning a hobby into a profit. Focus on the specifics of their business.
FINALIZE YOUR BUSINESS PLAN. WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN NEXT: LEGALLY, EDUCATION, AND FINANCIALLY.
You should spend time researching the different types of equipment and costs and estimate how much money you will need to purchase or lease these items. If you find that you need to borrow money in a small business loan arrangement, know that it is suggested that you research your different options as well to incorporate this into your plan.
EDUCATE YOURSELF IN SALES.. . VERY IMPORTANT.
While this may be a fine method for you to learn sales, it will likely prove to be a waste of time. If you decide to follow a salesman, make sure you are watching these crucial parts of their sales call, otherwise, you have wasted your time following them. Some entrepreneurs will learn sales from a job in sales.
CREATE. DESIGN. WHAT WORKS WITH YOUR BUSINESS MODEL?
Constant analysis of your business will help keep it on solid footing until it starts to become successful and profitable. If you find that your business is profitable in your “niche”, as we had discussed earlier, you can start to incorporate other avenues of your hobby into your business.
RINSE AND REPEAT
If you have a business model that works and you do not see much for improvement, (or perhaps, you don’t need to improve because your sales are doing so well), then this is likely the best thing for you to do in order for your company to grow. It won’t take you a lot of extra effort to develop another identical business, but it will allow for you to earn more money doing what you love to do.
All the best
Alan
